Engineered hardwood flooring in a Lakewood Ranch, FL home

The difference between solid and engineered wood floors

If you?ve never experienced hardwood flooring personally, you might not know the difference between solid and engineered products, and that?s what we?re going to address in today?s post. Be sure to read along, as one is likely to serve you better than the other.

Wood floors are not all the same

The main difference between solid and engineered hardwood is the construction. As you might expect, solid wood is all wood, through and through, with no additional materials added, while engineered wood is constructed of layers of plywood and topped with a veneer or natural solid wood.

Both products allow you to choose a specific species, color, grade, finish, and installation technique, but engineered wood is the only product available for below-grade installation. As a result, it's better suited for these areas, which can often succumb to moisture, dampness, and temperature changes.

You?ll also find both floors can be refinished once wear begins to show through, giving you the ability to bring them back to a like-new appearance, even after decades of use. Solid wood offers the most extended lifespan, at more than 100 years, but you'll get a great 30 years or more from engineered products.
